Now Playing - Rockin' Robin

Well it seems like life has been very busy lately. Strange how a person can complain that nothing big is going on and then all of a sudden it is non stop action. I left for Arizona to attend a conference. I was out there for five days. Needless to say it was hot. Phoenix was a hot place that is for sure. Did not have day below 100 degrees.

People say it is a dry heat. So I took a glass of water and put it in the microwave and heated it for two minutes. Then I threw it on my foot. It was hot. Then I took my finger and put it over a match flame. It was hot. After extensive testing in the above manner I am going to tell anyone dry heat, wet heat , both are hot. My air conditioner was broken for two nights. That did not help much. The girl at the desk ran over to Target and bought me a fan so I would not melt away. I sure was grateful for her kindness.

Out there life is different. People do not have grass in their yards. Instead they just gravel their space and it appears that chickens must be a luxury to the common man. I am not even going to mention cattle because looking at that land I have no idea how much land it would take to raise a rabbit let alone a cow. Grass is a rarity. When shade comes from a cactus there is a problem.

I was quiet when talking to people. Did not want to brag and let them know that I had chickens and cows at home. Just did not think I should make them feel bad. Most of them probably never even have been able to mow a lawn. Kind of feel sorry for people like that. Wonder what they do for fun?

Had a rental car. Went down to Mexico one afternoon. It is evident that a lot of people go there to buy their pharmaceuticals medicines. On the way home I saw a Gold Wing motorcycle pull off the road. I pulled off the road also. It was sunset and I thought the driver might need some assistance. The temperature had cooled off from a balmy 104 to a chilly 90 degrees. The driver had pulled off the road to put on a jacket. So I was of no help to him.

Did get to meet a lot of interesting people while I was there. I met this young lady who was a horticulture expert. Boy did I have a lot of questions for her. I guess she got her job at the motel because the green house she use to work at told her about the motel and how they needed a horticulture expert. Thinking back on it, that should have been a clue.

Any ways the Hotel has this lawn that was very nice. I asked what kind of grass it was. She told me that it was Tiff grass. Then asked where to get some seed for it. Being a horticulture expert she told me that only way to get Tiff grass was sod. Asked where the sod comes from? Later on I looked it up and found out that this Tiff grass seed can not be bought. Good thing I did not ask where eggs and milk come from.

Thin and Ugly, the steer is having a tough time. On Sunday we found him out in the pasture down on the ground unable to stand. Some how we loaded him onto our little tilt trailer and pulled him with the lawn mower to the house. Sherry has informed me that she does not think now is the right time to ask for a real tractor. So I remain quiet. The Vet came out and looked at Thin and Ugly. He felt there was no helping this animal and how it remained alive was beyond him. His professional medical advice, which he charged for, was we should shoot the animal. Guess his brother is a Family Practice Doctor. Do not think I will go and see him. Heard HMO’s like this family though.

Phillip and I have rigged up a sling using a plastic barrel and a come along and hoisted the steer up into a tree. The steer showed no interest in using his legs nor did he seem to have the ability to use his legs. I spent an hour or so doing range of motion exercises with the steer but nothing seemed to help. Even the neighbors came over to help. I guess they were all wondering why we wanted to put that cow in a swing. I think sometimes the neighbors watch us as it cheaper entertainment than cable TV.

We went to the State Fair in Oklahoma City. Did not see any of our vegetables there. Did not see any of our animals there either. There is an open class for showing bulls. Sherry and I are in disagreement right now. The only requirement is the bull must have a nose ring, be halter broke and manageable. “10” is all that. I would like to take him to the fair. I think we should show him. Sherry thinks I just want the bull to meet young heifers. She thinks it would be something like a teenage boy / old man being invited to spend the weekend at the Playboy Mansion. Sometimes I do not know where she gets some of those ideas. I do not know if we should tell “10” that there is a bigger world out there. There are three state fairs in Oklahoma so it could be a lot of fun for him. There is a lot that he is missing. A lot of people could also see “10”.

Life is good.
