Now Playing - On The Road Again

We spent the weekend traveling. Took Friday off and went to Saint Louis. I had an old High School Friend (Shyam) graduating with an Executive Master in Business Administration. It is just incredible to think that we have known each other for over 20 years and we met in Bangalore, India. Went to High School when I was really young. So Sherry and I had the opportunity to spend a lot of time in the car. Lately life has been so very busy that we have not had the time to just sit around and talk. The car trip was wonderful for us especially right before our Anniversary. Yet it seems like no matter how much time you spend with someone you do not know that much about them. Maybe I just forget some of the things she tells me?

Our friend Shyam and his wife Gowri have two children. Sidanth (Sid) is age three and Sitara is 9 months old. Sid asked so many questions. I really had an opportunity to learn a lot about Sherry that I never knew before. There were times that Sid could not remember my name so I was called “Farmer Man”.I was not even wearing my bibs at the time. I guess he is just a smart child. Sherry on the other has had a checkered past. Sid asked, “Do you remember when you were a cow?, and just ate grass?” Sherry looked so shocked when he said that. I guess she thought the rest of us would not find out. He then thought my past included days when I was horse and chased the cow around in the grass. Must admit that I do not remember those days. Sherry claims not to have any memory of being a cow. She does not even remember being chased around the pasture by me nor does she remember all that grass eating. I thought the only thing unusual about her upbringing was being from Oklahoma (as I am a Nebraskan) and stories of red dirt. Sid on the other hand remembers all these events when he use to be a tiger. I guess we all have a past. There are times when a person may regret the past and wish to shut the door on it. It is alright with me if we forget the days when we ran around in the pasture and ate grass. But what do we tell the children?

Showed Sherry a big monument while we were there. Let her see it up close and she really enjoyed it. I guess she had never seen the St. Louis Arch up close before. We toured to the top and looked down. Could see for about twenty five miles. 636 feet is a ways up there. Just amazing how that was built, glad I did not have to do the welding on that project. Then again I am not to weld for employment. Saint Louis continues to change with every one of my visits. Really a growing town. Amazing how expensive housing is there. We looked in the paper and saw this one little two bedroom house and they were asking $165,000 for it. Guess we are blessed not to be in that kind of housing market.

Guess we had some chicken / turkey problems while being gone. Left the birds to free range while we were on the road. Plenty of rations were left for them to eat and we were only gone for two nights. Got home on Sunday and it looked like the big Tom turkey was missing some feathers. They were just laying around in the yard. Phillip found part of a possum tail in the yard also. Wonder what happened? Phillip thinks the turkeys sleep outside as security. I think the other chickens realize that to eat one turkey, maybe the predator would be too full to eat chicken. Still hot, looks like there will not be any relief in the temperatures or any rain until October. Then I guess will be complaining about the cold. I have noticed the electric bill is being affected by all this. I have found out that the number of doors left open always varies inversely with the outdoor temperature?

Heard the hottest summer average in the United States is Death Valley, Calif., 98 °F. Think that we are going to give them a run for their money this year. Heard things expand and get larger when they heat up. I guess that is why the days are longer in the summer and shorter in winter. The heat is getting the best of me. Our ponds are low so I have been encouraging the ducks to swim in the deep end and keep ignoring the, "no peeing" rule. Have a new business plan. If the heat does not let up I am going to sell barbecue directly from the pasture. At this rate I think I can let the customer choose the animal and then I will use a pressure washer to hose it down with sauce. With in about twenty minutes I think the barbecue will be piping hot and ready to eat.
