Now Playing - Hello Darlin'

Well this is a great day for our service people. I remember once being in the jungles of Central America wishing that I could spend Memorial Day with my family. I asked my boss and he said no. Told me when I became a veteran I could celebrate those days. At that time I was not a veteran I was on active duty for the Army.
So now days I am glad to be a veteran and to be with my family on holidays like this. I am grateful to all the vets that have come before me and all those that have followed me. I know the price of freedom has a price and glad that we pay it on a daily basis.

We rushed to get the house all spiffed up and have it ready for guests. Rick and Christy came for the weekend. Jeri and Leonard also came on Sunday. They will never know how grateful they should be. I saved their backs and hands that is for sure.

Sherry has a book on Pole Barns and was convinced that if we ordered the lumber and had it delivered then my Brother-in- Law (Rick) and my Father -in- Law (Leonard) could just built it. It would be bonding time for us. What with their help and the boys we could just get it done.

I have the feeling there are not too many relatives of mine that want to bond with me. Then again I could be wrong. I wonder if we could have some family members stop in the day we clean the chicken coop out so we could bond.

My nieces are so cute. They wanted to ride the lawnmowers. So I got them out and let them cut about one acre of grass. Now the word I got, was this sure is fun then after a while it started to feel alot like work. I guess there is no fooling those city girls. At first glance some might not know all the love, Sherry and I have for others. We just want people to have a farming experience. My parents must be the same way as my father keeps inviting me up to Nebraska. Something about some bonding time. I think they must love me a lot also.

I sent Katlynne out to round up the geese. One of the geese came after her flapping and hissing. After the screaming was over she very politely came in and let me know that she was not really an outdoor girl. I did see her go outside later when they were loading up to go home. She was very cute. We were out holding the baby ducks and she was very nervous about them biting her. I have heard of this before. Working long hours in EMS and Emergency Rooms we all feared the calls when a child would come rushing in with duck bites.

My niece Hannah I do not know what to make of her. She is one of a kind. On Sunday she spent the day following Phillip around. Phillip now has a four wheeler. During our small engine class the instructor showed the students the importance of having a clean air filter. So all of our equipment has either a new air filter or the filter has been cleaned many times. Well she watched Phillip take apart that four wheeler many times and clean the air filter. When Phillip came in he smelled like gas. We were all sitting around the table and commented on the aroma. Hannah informed us that she liked the smell. Hard to tell what the future holds. Just picture the look her father will have on his face the first time she walks into the house with that I am in love look on. When she proudly tells all that will listen that he is wonderful and he smells like 10W40.

Emily enjoyed riding the motorcycle. I was showing off to her as we rode the roads. I have a CD player on it and I was switching the songs from the out side speakers to the headsets in the helmets. When we got back she kept telling everyone that I was singing to the songs and I was an awful singer. I think she was hearing the songs thru the headsets. Then again who do does not sing to Conway Twitty’s “Hello Darling.” I guess my chances of being on the Gong show are greater than American Idol at this current time.

The fish did get on the hooks after some coaxing. Rick caught a nice bass and Hannah caught a catfish. Emily caught a huge catfish but was unable to get it to shore. Next time we will have the tractor out there to help pull it in. She has fishing in her blood. There is something magical about getting a fish on a line and pulling it in.

This week we will be busy filling out grant forms. Met a lady that had a green house and filed for a $2,500 grant and was awarded it, for growing a few blue berries. Boy will we be generating ideas for grants this week. This sounds like an even better deal than that extra mailbox.
