For those that do not realize it, Okmulgee is the Pecan
Capital of the world. On Saturday we hosted the largest pecan pie in
the world. Wish my mother could have seen it. She is still
having nightmares about pecans. Last Christmas I asked what she
wanted for Christmas, she wanted pecans. I wanted her to be proud of
me so we got her 75 lbs of them. I did not have them cracked for
her. She had to crack them all by hand. I have heard that she
does not want pecans this year. Guess I should not have told her it
cost $0.25 a pound to have them cracked. (Sometimes she does
not appreciate my thriftiness.)
Jeannie and I went to see the Beauty pageant for the Pecan
Festival. Nothing like a 100 children in one room and under the age
of three. The children were all dressed up. One little boy was
dressed up like a king with a flowing red robe. Many of the little
girls wore elaborate dresses. Jeannie thinks someone should
have been dressed up like a little pecan. If you ask me, I thought a
lot of them were dressed up like nuts.
Phillip now has a part time job at Baptist Village.
It is a nursing home. He is working on cleaning out a pond for
them. On Friday he needed to get back early because the girls down
there are really hot. I do not know if it is post Menopause thing or
if he needs to get his eyes checked? I will talk to Sherry about
this.
We are starting a mentoring project and trying to write a
governmental grant for it. We have placed the turkeys in with the
quail. We believe this will lead to cultural diffusion. The
quail suffer from low self esteem. The belief is that with the two
of them together it will raise the quail esteem. Jean has now
started calling all the poultry, “quail.” We think this will help
the little birds assimilate into the crowd.
By doing this we also hope to invite people out from the
city to hunt the quail. Due to the fact that our quail (chickens)
are so big I think we will be able to offer hunting to the visually
impaired. We may even paint a few of them so pheasants can also be
hunted.
I do not know if the turkeys will be good
mentors. They have to look at everything and are very curious.
We have 20 straw bales stacked up in a corner. Plan on using the
straw for garden mulch. The turkeys all went over to the
stack. They had the special one just sit and watch while the three
healthy ones climbed to the top of the stack. The big white Tom then
pushed the other two off the stack. I am wondering after watching
that and knowing what happened with the baby ducks if we need to have our
water checked.
Soon it will be Father’s Day. I have been measuring
my Success lately. I measure Success by the following three
items. Being Loved, Loving, and having Prayer in my life. So
many times I have cried out, “Why me?” I have heard “Why
not me?” The children are all loving. Sherry is more than I
could have ever prayed for.
And I have love in my life. I sure am thankful for my
own father and the fathers that have effected my life, (Leonard Nusz,
Kevin Twist). Grateful for lessons that children are to be
loved. Some have thought that I have no respect for child labor
laws, but I remember the days of going to school uphill both ways in the
snow. Or joining the Army so no one would be bossing me
around. I guess I was a slow learner.
We recently have had 6
different guests out to the place. All wanted to see where the bull
got out over the fence and see the cows that he made friends with. I
have never heard of such a thing. A lot of people use to tell me to
take my bull and go home. That was even before we owned
cattle. I have been thinking that we should make it into an Oklahoma
tourist attraction. Big sign out on the highway. “See
the Fence “10” got over. Meet the Cows he did” Just $5 a
person. Family rates available.
