Now Playing - Dill Pickle Rag

July 22-28 2003

Cake decorating class has now ended for a while. For the last class the girls made some flowers. I guess we are now going to store them in the freezer just waiting for someone to come by demanding a decorated cake. Looking back, I should have suggested they go to the BBQ class. Think of it this way what happens if someone comes over wanting some ribs and sauce?

I have been needing to do some do some fence work in the neighbors pasture. It is a little warm here so I thought it would be nice to get some help. The kids were all gone so I do not have them for labor. Well I placed an ad on Tradio. Some guy wanted to work the fence for $600. I just needed to get some wire stretched and some wired added. He was so proud that his father had taught him to fence and he has known how to do it for three years now. I was guessing ( by listening to him ) that he was in his late twenties. Maybe he is a late bloomer. Are people not born knowing how to fence? You put up an obstacle and animals or other objects can not go thru it. I mean I have watched children building fence before they could walk. I am not going to his house to drink the water. Needless to say he did not help me with repairs.

The turkeys are on the wrong side of Sherry now. They were once her more treasured farm animal. Times have changed. A while back Sherry planted a bunch of Morning Glory flowers in the fence row. This week she caught the turkeys eating the young sprouts. The kids and I have been pleading with her and telling her the chickens tricked the turkeys into eating the flowers, but she is not biting off on that idea yet.

Phillip goes out each week and weighs the turkeys. He takes out a scale and places it on the ground and then goes and holds the turkeys as he steps on the scale. I guess our big one is over 40 lbs now. To listen to Phillip the turkey saw its weight and now it will not eat any more tomatoes. Guess it is ashamed of its weight.

Sherry is convinced that the corn is putting the weight on the birds and not the tomatoes. She says that tomatoes are heart healthy. Hard to believe that around here even the poultry are receiving diet counseling and healthy choices. Our one little chick has two hens watching over all the time. Do not know what the situation is on this. Both seem very pleased with watching over their little ward. I guess this was a cheaper solution than placing the one hen on an antidepressant.

Jean has left for the summer and returned to Kansas City getting ready to start school. Will be missing her as she was becoming the little cook for us. It was nice to come home and have something already prepared for us.

Her packing habits need some improvement. How one person needs so much to live for the summer is unclear to me. I use to leave for deployments in the military and be gone a couple of months and not pack as much as she does for a visit. I predict that she will have to own a pickup someday just to be able to go and visit friends for the weekend. Even as a baby we had a trailer to haul her stuff around in it. Amazing she has been able to take so many motorcycle trips with me. Now days I do not know if the bike could even carry two days of her clothing.

Phillip and I are finishing the welding class. He has been wanting to start auto body repair for a while now. Thinks our fortune can be in that. No more T.V. for us. No more couches and cool air, instead we will live in the garage repairing everything we can find. Glad he is able to dream so big for both of us.

Sherry was out picking some tomatoes last night. When she came inside she was washing up and noticed that her armpits were all green. I guess she got scared. Said that she was thinking of all these awful diseases she could have had. Come to find out it was from reaching over the vines.

Wonder how I would have explained to Emergency Room Staff that she had mold in her arm pits. Glad I did not have to take her in. Do not think the insurance would have covered it. “Don’t worry Mr. O’Mara your wife is just moldy.” What a relief that I did not hear those words from the Doctor.

We are going to meet with Sherry’s folks this weekend and be part of the city wide garage sale. Life is good.
