The Return of the Sacrewell Site

I have had many queries about the demise of the Sacrewell site I once ran, and where we had our own social networking site before Facebook was even heard of. Many decry its demise and not having access anymore to the numerous field recordings and photos etc submitted by members, and not least the idle chat. I can heartily report that after a year or more we now have it back online again at:

http://www.myfamily.com/group/11646818

Non-members can browse this public site, but have to register to upload or download, and the great news is that it is totally free. Past members’ logins should still work and save you registering again. It’s a totally new interface and a lot easier than the old one. Some old features are lost like the Calendar Section but all the old recordings and photos and videos are back. This new site is in the public domain so it can shared, but I can revert it to being a login only site if members prefer, so please get yourself registered if not already.

For those not familiar with the Sacrewell site allow me to recap. The old site was initially free but as with many online services, once they have enough people hooked they start to charge an annual subscription. Being that the Sacrewell site had been flourishing for probably a decade I managed to secure it’s annual subsidy from FOAOTMAD to keep it going. However some years into that the host site (Myfamily.com) went balmy and decided to pull the plug on all their subscription sites and summarily froze them - I suspect their hardware was too old and not up to modern demands of playing MP3s and videos etc while other online freebies like Facebook could. Then later they had a change of mind (probably after the outcry) and said they’d start a new domain and migrate the old stuff to the new one, but only if you dug a little deeper and upgraded. No thank you was my reaction, for by then we had had enough of their bungling while the likes of Facebook beckoned.

Unfortunately Facebook proved to be unsuitable, especially for sharing our hundreds of recordings in a user-friendly way and for not being secure, and we have had no social networking site to speak of since. However, for non-technophobes I managed to archive the discrete files from the old Sacrewell site to this FTP site at: http://colm.ion-systems.net/music/Sacrewell%20&%20Gainsborough/. Then about 6 months ago Myfamily.com relented and announced free membership on the new domain, and after some migration delays I find it’s all back with us again….do I hear rapturous applause?

I’m sure that many who missed out the first time around from learning all those regularly played tunes at sessions and camps and festivals will sign up and celebrate The Return of the Sacrewell Site.

Best Wishes
